Crispy Tofu Bowl

Crispy tofu bowl on rice with cucumbers

Ingredients:

  • 2 packages Extra Firm Tofu (16oz)
  • 3 tbsp Cornstarch 
  • 1 cup White or Brown Rice
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 3 tbsp sesame or vegetable oil

Instructions:

1. Drain the tofu and pat it dry with paper towels to remove

 all of the excess moisture. 

2. Chop the tofu into bite-sized cubes and pat them dry 

again; Optional:You can place a weight over the tofu for

 15-30 minutes to remove more moisture.

3. Transfer the tofu to a dish and sprinkle with some salt, garlic powder, and pepper. Toss to evenly season the tofu. (Garlic powder and pepper optional)

4. Sprinkle 1 tbsp of cornstarch over the tofu. Toss to evenly coat in the dish and toss until all the cornstarch is used. .

5. Set a frying pan over medium-high heat and add the oil. Heat until the oil shimmers and flows smoothly to coat the bottom of the pan. It should not smoke. If you see a little smoke, reduce the heat slightly.

6. Add tofu cubes to the pan and let them sizzle. If all don’t fit, the frying can be done in two batches. 

7. Cook tofu for 5-6 minutes until lightly golden-brown on the bottom. Wait until the tofu releases from the pan before browning the next side. 

8. Then flip the tofu cubes with a spoon or spatula and continue frying for another 5-6 minutes until all sides are browned and crispy.

Note - if the oil starts to splatter a little in the pan while flipping the tofu, remove the pan from heat for 1-2 minutes before frying again.

9. Transfer tofu to a plate and serve over rice and enjoy!
