[00:00:09.630] - Ashley

Welcome to Nutrition Navigator's podcasts, bringing nutrition and wellness to you.

[00:00:13.520] - Ashley

Together, we learn from a variety of health professionals about their stories and how they contribute to the world that is wellness. Our program is called nutrition navigators. We aim to help college students navigate nutrition on and off campus. We focus on diversity and work to make wellness a less stressful place where all bodies are celebrated. We are a monthly podcast. And this week we have a final/finals bonus episode for you all. So we're switching things up a little. I'm Ashley Munro, I'm one of the nutrition counselors at Campus Health and the advisor for this program. Our special guest today is also my co-host, Kayla, our fabulous student coordinator for nutrition navigators, Kayla is graduating this month. And we are both super, excited and a little sad that she's moving on. But she's going to do amazing. We're going to talk all things final, tips for wellness and some shares on her experience working at campus health during her undergraduate career. Let's have a very conversational chat with Miss Kayla.

[00:01:16.230] - Ashley

Well, hi Kayla! (laughs) welcome to the show.

[00:01:22.130] - Kayla

Doing good!

[00:01:25.890] - Ashley

Today is a bonus episode for this semester and we're going to wrap things up. It was our first semester having the podcast. So we thought it would be fun to record an episode just with Kayla and I. And plus, Kayla is graduating this month, so we're super excited and proud of her. I thought we would ask you some questions today, based on how your experience was, not only on the podcast, but just working at campus health in general.

[00:02:02.490] - Ashley

So just for for folks that don't know, Kayla is the student coordinator at Campus Health and Nutrition Navigators, is one of the one of the programs she works with. But I wanted to ask, how long did you work at Campus Health and what were your main duties? Because I know  you don't just work with nutrition navigators. You spread your your talents all over campus health.

[00:02:40.180] - Kayla

Right, yeah, so I started at Campus Health in the fall 2018. Right?

[00:02:58.590] - Ashley

Feel like everyone is having a hard time with with time right now, because time is like soup. A student told me the other day, time is like soup because it's 2020 and it's weird.

[00:03:09.530] - Kayla

Yeah. Yes. I remember Lisa and I were talking about like a covid timewarp so yeah. Fall of 2018 when I started. It was August and the position I initially applied for, was the nutrition navigators, student coordinator.

[00:03:30.550] - Kayla

And upon starting most of the work was, you know, hosting Nutrition Navigator Spotlight series, managing and coordinating volunteers, their schedules when they're going to volunteer with us, whether it be with the Spotlight series or marketing and tabling events. A lot of emails advertising, a lot of on campus flyer distribution, walking around that took like, oh my gosh, like 12 hours. That was like a 2 day job, but it really helped.

[00:04:14.490] - Kayla

I will say I did love walking around the campus and putting those flyers up all those semesters because it really helped me remember and understand, like the layout of campus, before that I had no idea where anything was.

[00:04:41.090]

And then from those duties, it kind of leads into helping with cooking on campus, emailing, anything that they need help with websites, recipes, body positive marketing as well, and anything that they need help with as far as their events go, when things were sort of "normal."

[00:05:11.530] - Ashley

I think because Nutrition Navigator's is like the umbrella, right, where the umbrella program, so it's like Nutrition Navigator's, but we also support Cooking on Campus and Body Positive Arizona, which are the two other other nutrition programs in health promotion. Yes. Your job description was that you interviewed for, was for nutrition navigators, but you definitely supported all the other programs, too.

[00:05:45.130] - Kayla

Yeah, definitely. And then on top of that, like in addition, it was a lot of extra duties that campus health just needed in general too.  It's whatever anyone needs help because I understand there's a lot of other moving parts at Campus Health. So if they need help with, say, for example, the Health and Wellness Surveys in the spring that we do, administering those, because I know we survey thousands of students, so there's only so many people we have.

[00:06:12.550] - Kayla

So I love helping out with that.  Free condom Friday. As of recently, if you guys have seen me at the table on Fridays from 12-2pm semester, so much fun, so much.

[00:06:26.410] - Ashley

What a good opportunity to to see all the other moving parts, like you said. Kayla comes to our staff meetings every Wednesday. So getting to be a part of the staff meetings and collaborate with all the different members that make up our health promotion team.

[00:06:43.780] - Kayla

And it's like a huge exposure to public health. And it's not just the nutrition field.  It's public health in general, even helping with the COVID testing at the beginning of the semester,  just running tests back and forth and helping greet students and navigating.  Because it was a totally new environment. So just really anything that they needed help with, I was happy to help with.

[00:07:11.620] - Ashley

Well, and you're just so flexible and approachable, I think that you're often a go to when it comes to, you know, having a student face helping students out.  So students helping students,  Kayla is just awesome because she's very approachable and knowledgeable and you've been with us for two years. I think that shows that you have a lot of knowledge. That kind of goes into my next question, which is, what is your favorite part of of it all? Your favorite part of working at campus health?  I guess not necessarily your favorite department, but your favorite part of just being on the team.

[00:07:54.940] - Kayla

I would say my favorite part would probably be the work environment that campus health has to offer.

[00:08:27.250] - Kayla

Being at Campus Health has just been absolutely amazing, and I'm pretty positive that any of the other student workers that I've worked with, we've even talked about this, and just been like, "oh, my gosh, everyone is so inviting." It's so much fun. Like no matter what position someone's in or like what their age is, at the end of the day, like we're all here to do the same job and we pull together. And it's a very collaborative atmosphere. Bouncing ideas off of one another, learning from each other. And it's just it's so much fun. And I just love those connections and relationships I've made with everyone there. And I'm sure,  I'll continue to have those connections with everyone. And especially like you guys, the dietitians like Ashley, Lisa and Christy.

[00:09:23.050] - Kayla

I think that's the number one thing I love about about campus health definitely.

[00:09:28.480] - Ashley

I think it's a it's a unique working environment and it is very collaborative and it's we're very lucky. That's also that's one of my favorite parts of working, too. If there's one piece of advice you could give the student audience, having worked at campus health being soon to be college graduate, podcast host, what would be what would be your piece of advice for four students out there listening?

[00:10:21.710] - Ashley

That you would give students about their health and wellness.

[00:10:27.310] - Kayla

Right, I I think my biggest piece of advice, because this is just something I've always kind of lived by. Is not having regrets, like no matter what has happened or like what you choose to do. Don't have regrets because having regrets, is not going to change anything. It's just going to bring yourself down.

[00:11:18.130] - Kayla

Despite covid there's still so many things, there's still so many blessings that have come through covid happening and we can only control the things we can control. We can't control covid. So you have the choice to just stay positive, do what you need to do to move forward. And just like not having regrets, like "Oh I should have done this instead of that." I

[00:11:53.560] - Ashley

I love the "should" thing because sometimes I tell students, like, stop "shoulding" all over yourself. "I should be doing this. I should be doing that". Or, you know, and it is though it's with a lot of things like I think regret puts us into this place of like feeling guilty or shameful about something that happened or didn't happen or whatever. It's like everything that happens is an experience and is an opportunity for growth or is an opportunity to have that to put in your filing cabinet for something you can draw upon later on.

[00:12:28.120] - Ashley

So I think I think that goes into it's like a life thing and then it parallels and overlaps very well with like health and wellness, too.

[00:12:57.730] - Ashley

What do you think the opportunity for this podcast could be?

[00:13:10.440] - Kayla

I would hope that the podcast would continue to grow and hopefully become something campus health that is not just nutrition based.  I mean, we kind of already touched on that this semester, you know doing interviews with people that is about centering health.  Episodes about a more positive environment and like the implicit bias episode.  I would just hope that it would continue to grow and that more people would hear about it and tell their friends.

[00:13:57.120] - Kayla

I just think it's something that because no one I mean, I don't know anyone else that has started a podcast like Campus Health or. Yeah. So I just think it's something that can definitely grow and hopefully students can learn from and it would continue for however many years.

[00:14:19.410] - Ashley

It can be this amazing resource that Kayla was with her, her idea, her baby, like I said.

[00:14:28.500] - Ashley

And so if you're a listener to the podcast this semester, you know that at the end we always do end of the podcast question. So just like quick rapid fire questions.

[00:14:49.610] - Ashley

So today we are going to do that. But the remix, because we've actually already heard Kayla's answers to the original four questions on Episode one. So if you want to learn more about Kayla's favorite food items, go back to Episode one, The Welcome episode. But today, we're going to do the remix, and it's kind of based on it's got a little bit of finals theme because we're in that season right now and this will come out right before our final starts.

[00:15:19.140] - Ashley

And just like a little bit of graduation theme, since we're celebrating the fact that Kayla is on her way out and up. OK, are you ready? There's only four.

[00:15:35.840] - Kayla

Yes!

[00:15:41.480] - Ashley

OK, here we go. If if you can do college again. What would you do exactly the same?

[00:15:54.630] - Kayla

If I could do it again. That is funny because it took me five ever to finish. I would definitely redo the the campus health experience, choosing to apply, and then getting the job and just moving forward.  Because because campus health was probably the biggest influence on my college experience.

[00:16:58.120] - Ashley

I love that answer. OK, this is kind of about finals. If you can pick a finals format, like the way the professor gives the format of the exam, would it be essay style or multiple choice?

[00:17:12.810] - Kayla

Hmm, that's a great question, Ashley. I I don't know, I feel like I'm very in the middle when it comes to essay style or multiple choice, because I think it really has to depend on the curriculum that's being tested on.

[00:18:11.930] - Kayla

Maybe I'll lean towards, essay, style.

[00:18:31.590] - Ashley

OK, I left a food one in there just because foods our thing. But go to finals snacks like when you're studying your study snacks?

[00:18:44.960] - Kayla

I'm not very picky. Maybe like some fruit leather. I really am a huge fan of fruit leathers. You know, maybe like a bar, like a KIND bar.

[00:19:57.230] - Ashley

IF you could pick a speaker for graduation, anybody. Who do you want to look to for graduation?

[00:20:42.540] - Kayla

So, OK, so I mean, they probably have to be alive, right? Because you know

[00:20:46.090] - Ashley

why? I think we can do whatever we want.

[00:20:49.290] - Kayla

We can we can get a hologram or something. But that's just one speaker. Personally for graduation, I would probably have to choose I mean, she's well, alive and well, I would choose Michelle Obama.

[00:21:35.980] - Kayla

She was kind of part of the reason,  I had chosen to pursue nutrition in the first place. Her being like one of the first ladies to implement,  the healthy nutrition in schools and prevention and stuff like that. So when I was looking into a lot of that in high school and college, and started getting into fitness and nutrition.

[00:22:05.050] - Kayla

That was kind of a huge impact on me choosing to major in nutrition, although I did end up changing it.

[00:22:30.100] - Ashley

Well, I love it. Kayla, thank you so much for being a part of the podcast. We're going to miss you.  I think the students are lucky to hear a student's perspective always. And I think that's what's great about the podcast, is that we involve all the students as much as we can. So, yeah, thank you for all you do for us.
